DAFFODILS 400 BLOOM - April 2023

In 2020, the Great Island Garden Club (GIGC) began a 3-year project to celebrate New Castle’s 400th anniversary in 2023. Daffodil bulbs were sold to town residents to plant in their gardens. GIGC members also planted bulbs at the Great Island Common, Town Landing/Coast Guard Station, the causeway 'boat,' Library/Recreation Center, and fire & police stations. In all, nearly 8,000 bulbs were planted. The hope was that by the actual anniversary celebration, every yard, garden, and public space would be awash with color. It worked!

Daffodils signify rebirth and new beginnings, thus honoring our last 400 years and looking ahead to the next 400. More practically, daffodils are hardy, deer-resistant, and quick to multiply. Plan a drive to New Castle in mid to late April 2023 to see thousands of bright yellow, white, and orange daffodils in bloom. It will be quite a sight!
